One black-and-white illustration; reproductions of the original Articles of Incorporation. "The Young Ladies' Institute was founded in San Francisco, September 5, 1887. It was on the occasion of a social visit by Mrs. Richardson and Mrs. Coogan to the home of Mrs. Sweeney that Young Ladies' Institute had its inception.....They then decided to organize a society of Catholic young women for beneficial and social purposes. They first interviewed Archbishop Riordan of the Archdiocese of San Francisco, who, in turn, referred them to Father John J. Prendergast, then Vicar-General of the Archdiocese, with whom plans were discussed and formulated."
